The Arizona Chapter American Concrete Institute invites you to Submit your projects for our 2027 Exposing the BEST in Concrete Awards Gala

Exposing the BEST in Concrete Awards honors exceptional concrete construction from around Arizona. Projects are recognized for the degree of innovation, complexity, achievement, and value that concrete as a material provides.

Recently completed and nominated concrete projects are judged by an independent panel of industry professionals and Honorary Lifetime Members. Only one project will stand out by receiving the overall Excellence Award on Saturday evening September 25th, 2027, at Mountain Shadows Resort in Paradise Valley, AZ

Submission deadline is April 1, 2027

Eligibility

Submit your project by 5:00 p.m. on April 1, 2027.

The nominated project must consist of new construction that was substantially completed within the 36 months preceding the submission deadline.

Project Categories

Nominations are accepted in the following categories:*

Low-Rise Structures: Buildings up to three stories residential (multi-family and houses), school, commercial, warehouse and industrial, etc.
Mid-Rise Structures: Buildings four to fifteen stories
High-Rise Structures: Buildings more than fifteen stories
Bridges: a structure carrying a road, path, railroad, or canal across a river, ravine, road, railroad, or other obstacle
Decorative: Decorative or architectural feature or element such as exterior or interior finishes, hardscapes, ornamentation, stained, stamped, or polished concrete, art installations, etc.
Flatwork: Pavements, parking lots, runways, commercial/industrial floors, etc.
Infrastructure: Basic facilities or systems serving a region or community, such as recreation, site, water, marine structures, etc.
Repair and Restoration: overlays, rehabilitation, remodel, retrofitting, etc.

*AZ ACI reserves the right to recategorize project nominations.

Rules

Entry must be a new construction substantially completed within the 36 months preceding the submission deadline.
Entry must highlight innovative use of concrete as a main principal construction element.
Entry must demonstrate creativity and innovation in the application of concrete technology.
A minimum of four photos - Vector Files are required per nomination. Not to exceed 20 photos. Nomination may include up to a 90-second time lapse video. No animations or artificial intelligence will be accepted. Concrete as well as the construction process should be featured in a majority of the photos.

Judging

Judging is conducted by a panel of qualified concrete and construction professionals with technical expertise in each award category, as well as project experience. Nominated projects will be judged on the following:

Architectural merit
Engineering merit
Creativity
Innovative construction techniques or solutions
Innovative use of materials
Ingenuity
Sustainability and resilience
Functionality and end-use suitability

Project Description

Provide a detailed project description in 300 words or fewer. You must include project completion date, project size (dimensions, area, span), concrete quantity (volume area tonnage), and construction work duration. This information will be judged and used in program and communication materials.

IMPORTANT: the information you provide will be published exactly as entered. AZ ACI is not responsible for errors and omissions made by the project’s representative.

Concrete Description

Provide a 500-word (or fewer) description of how concrete was featured in the project. It should also cover the complexity and uniqueness of the project and should include information such as:

Problem solving
Ecological and environmental factors

MASS CONCRETE — HOW BIG IS BIG?

What is mass concrete? ACI 207.1R defines mass concrete as any volume of concrete with dimensions large enough to require that measures be taken to cope with the generation of heat from hydration of the cement and attendant volume change to minimize cracking. But how does one predict whether mass concrete problems will occur and what steps should be taken? Reading & Understanding Construction Drawings

This introductory course is designed to help Construction Team Members build confidence in reading, understanding, and using construction drawings as a practical communication tool on a project. Team Members are introduced to the purpose of drawings, how drawing sets are organized, and how plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules, symbols, dimensions, and notes work together to describe the scope and requirements of the work.

The class is appropriate for new construction professionals, field staff, administrative team members, estimators, project engineers, interns, and anyone who needs a stronger foundation in navigating construction documents. Instruction will combine short explanations with real drawing examples, so participants learn where to find information, how to follow references from sheet to sheet, and how to ask better questions when drawings are unclear.

Key Topics Covered

· Understanding the purpose of construction drawings and their role in project communication

· Navigating a drawing set, including cover sheets, general notes, sheet indexes, and discipline drawings

· Reading basic plan views, elevations, sections, details, and schedules

· Recognizing common symbols, abbreviations, line types, dimensions, and callouts

· Understanding how drawings connect with specifications, submittals, RFIs, and field coordination

· Identifying key information needed for layout, estimating, procurement, and construction activities

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants should be able to locate important information in a drawing set, interpret basic drawing views, understand common symbols and references, and explain how drawings support communication between design teams, contractors, subcontractors, and field personnel. The goal is not to make learners experts in every discipline, but to give them a practical foundation for reading drawings accurately and participating more effectively in construction project coordination.

We will provide a certificate of completion to all who successfully pass the exam. A self-reporting certificate will also be available to those who can submit for continuing education credits.

Tucson ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade 1 Certification (23 Oct 2026)

This is a two day program conducted in Tucson at the CalPortland Plant located at: 6601 N. Casa Grande Hwy. Tucson, AZ Day 1 (Friday) consists of a classroom review session lasting 4 - 6 hours followed by the 60-minute written exam. Day 2 (Saturday) consists of a hands-on practice session followed by the performance (hands-on) exam. The package price includes the review and hands-on practice, the exams, all certification fees and the ACI workbook for this program.

A Concrete Field Testing Technician—Grade I is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform and record the results of seven basic field tests on freshly mixed concrete. It is your responsibility to obtain copies of the ASTM standards for study purposes. The study book does provide a good understanding of the standards but no longer print them.

Scope and Knowledge:
The program requires a working knowledge of the following ASTM test methods and practices:

C172/C172M—Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete

The one-hour written examination is closed-book and consists of 55 multiple-choice questions. There are between five and ten questions on each of the ASTM test methods and practices. To pass the written examination, BOTH of the following conditions must be met:

At least 60% correct for each of the required test methods and practices; AND
A minimum score of 70% overall.

The performance examination is also "closed book" and requires actual demonstration of six of the required test methods and practices plus a verbal description of Practice C172/C172M (sampling). The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform (or describe, where allowed) all of the required steps for each procedure.

Recertification is necessary every five years and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examination. Proper PPE is required to attend all sessions. Face Protection during the Covid virus is mandated inside and during exams, long sleeve shirt, long pants, gloves, closed toe shoes and safety glasses. You may be denied the exams if you do not have proper safety gear.

ACI Concrete Masonry Laboratory Testing Technician Certification and Written/Performance Retest (23 Oct 2026)

The package price includes the review, the exams, all certification fees and the ACI workbook for this program. A Masonry Laboratory Testing Technician is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to perform laboratory procedures required for preparation and testing of masonry construction-related materials including brick, structural clay tile, concrete masonry units, prisms, mortars, and grouts.

JTA for ACI Masonry Laboratory Testing Technician Certification

The JTA is a detailed list of specific points of knowledge and skills that may be included in the examinations for this ACI Certification program. ACI urges candidates to use the JTA to prepare for the certification exams.

Certification Requirements:
ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:

A passing grade on the ACI written examination; AND
Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.

The one-and-a-half hour written examination is open-book and consists of approximately 70 multiple-choice questions. There are between 8 and 12 questions on each of the ASTM test methods and practices. To pass the written examination, BOTH of the following conditions must be met:

At least 60% correct for each of the required test methods and practices; AND
A minimum score of 70% overall.

The performance examination is closed-book and requires actual demonstration of select field procedures described in ASTM test methods C140/C140M, C780, C1019, C1314, and C1552. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform (or describe, where allowed) required steps for each procedure.

Recertification is necessary every five years and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.

AZ ACI Chapter Meeting "Modern Concrete Technologies" (04 Nov 2026)

“Modern Concrete Technologies.”

Devon Fillingame, a member of the Engineering Technical Services team at Master Builders Solutions will be the presenter for this meeting. Concrete materials and technologies have evolved significantly in recent years, with changes in cement composition being among the most consequential. This presentation will address these developments and highlight innovative materials and admixture technologies that should be considered in modern concrete specifications to enhance long-term performance, durability, and constructability.

Devon Fillingame, CDT, is a Concrete Solutions Engineer at Master Builders Solutions, bringing over 11 years of experience in concrete technologies, with a focus on fiber-reinforced concrete. He works closely with engineers, architects, ready-mix customers, and contractors to develop MasterFiber reinforcement solutions for a wide range of concrete applications.

Devon is dedicated to advancing the industry’s understanding and adoption of fiber-reinforced concrete and other concrete technologies through technical presentations, webinars, and training. As part of the Engineering Technical Services Group, he supports project-specific solutions and specification development, helping the design and construction community apply these technologies efficiently.

At least 60% correct for each of the required practices and test methods, and
A minimum score of 70% overall.

The performance examination is also closed-book and requires actual demonstration of the required practices and test methods. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform all of the required steps for each procedure. Recertification is necessary every five years* and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.

*NOTE: Certifications initiated prior to January 1, 2008, were granted certification for six years. Due to a policy change, however, individuals initiating the certification process January 1, 2008, and later will be certified for five years. Proper PPE must be worn during exams and review sessions. Face protection, safety glasses, long pants/sleeve shirt, closed toe shoes and gloves. An Aggregate Testing Technician - Level 1 is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform, record, and report the results of basic field and laboratory procedures for aggregates. It is the responsibility of the Technician to obtain adequate training and exposure to the practices before coming to take the exam.

Job-task analysis (JTA) for ACI Certification of Concrete Strength Testing Technician

Certification Requirements:
ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:

A passing grade on the ACI written examination, and
Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.

At least 60% correct for each of the required practices and test methods, and
A minimum score of 70% overall.

C172/C172M—Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete
C143/C143M—Slump of Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
C138/C138M—Density (Unit Weight), Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete
C231/C231M—Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Pressure Method
C173/C173M—Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method
C31/C31M—Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field

Certification Requirements:
