     ACI Concrete Field Grade 1 Testing Technician Certification

    This is a two day program conducted in the Phoenix, Arizona area. Day 1 (Friday) consists of a classroom review session lasting 4 - 6 hours followed by the 60-minute written exam. Day 2 (Saturday) consists of a hands-on practice session followed by the performance (hands-on) exam. The package price includes the review and hands-on practice, the exams, all certification fees and the ACI workbook for this program.

    A Concrete Field Testing Technician—Grade I is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform and record the results of seven basic field tests on freshly mixed concrete.

    Scope and Knowledge:
    The program requires a working knowledge of the following ASTM test methods and practices:

    • C1064/C1064M—Temperature of Freshly Mixed Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
    • C172/C172M—Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete
    • C143/C143M—Slump of Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
    • C138/C138M—Density (Unit Weight), Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete
    • C231/C231M—Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Pressure Method
    • C173/C173M—Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method
    • C31/C31M—Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field

    Certification Requirements:
    ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:

    1. A passing grade on the ACI written examination; AND
    2. Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.

    The one-hour written examination is closed-book and consists of 55 multiple-choice questions. There are between five and ten questions on each of the ASTM test methods and practices. To pass the written examination, BOTH of the following conditions must be met:

    1. At least 60% correct for each of the required test methods and practices; AND
    2. A minimum score of 70% overall.

    The performance examination is also "closed book" and requires actual demonstration of six of the required test methods and practices plus a verbal description of Practice C172/C172M (sampling). The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform (or describe, where allowed) all of the required steps for each procedure.

    Recertification is necessary every five years and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examination.

    ACI Masonry Lab Testing 
Technician Certification

    This is a two day program that includes a 3 to 4 hour review session on Friday afternoon and the written and performance exams on Saturday morning. The package price includes the review, the exams, all certification fees and the ACI workbook for this program.  For those needing a re-test, you will attend the Saturday morning exam session only.

    A Masonry Laboratory Testing Technician is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to perform laboratory procedures required for preparation and testing of masonry construction-related materials including brick, structural clay tile, concrete masonry units, prisms, mortars, and grouts. 

    Scope and Knowledge:
    The program requires a working knowledge of laboratory procedures selected from the following ASTM test methods and practices:

    • C90—Loadbearing Concrete Masonry Units
    • C140/C140M—Sampling and Testing Concrete Masonry Units and Related Units
    • C270—Mortar for Unit Masonry
    • C780 and C780 Annex—Preconstruction and Construction Evaluation of Mortars for Plain and Reinforced Unit Masonry
    • C1019—Sampling and Testing Grout
    • C1314—Compressive Strength of Masonry Prisms
    • C1552—Capping Concrete Masonry Units, Related Units and Masonry Prisms for Compression Testing

    This program requires demonstration of the knowledge and hands-on skills covered on the Job Task Analysis (JTA):

    JTA for ACI Masonry Laboratory Testing Technician Certification

    The JTA is a detailed list of specific points of knowledge and skills that may be included in the examinations for this ACI Certification program. ACI urges candidates to use the JTA to prepare for the certification exams.

    Certification Requirements:
    ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:

    1. A passing grade on the ACI written examination; AND
    2. Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.

    The one-and-a-half hour written examination is open-book and consists of approximately 70 multiple-choice questions. There are between 8 and 12 questions on each of the ASTM test methods and practices. To pass the written examination, BOTH of the following conditions must be met:

    1. At least 60% correct for each of the required test methods and practices; AND
    2. A minimum score of 70% overall.

    The performance examination is closed-book and requires actual demonstration of select field procedures described in ASTM test methods C140/C140M, C780, C1019, C1314, and C1552. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform (or describe, where allowed) required steps for each procedure.

    Recertification is necessary every five years and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.

    ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician Certification

    This is a one day program in Yuma that includes a review session on Friday morning and the written and performance exams on Friday afternoon. The package price includes the review, the exams, all certification fees and the ACI workbook for this program (CP-19).

    Please note that since this is a one day course with the review and exams occurring on the same day, it is best suited for experienced field technicians or individuals who are renewing a past certification. Please contact us if you have questions.

    A Concrete Strength Testing Technician is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform, record, and report the results of four basic laboratory procedures related to the determination of concrete compressive and flexural strength.

    Scope and Knowledge:

    The program requires a working knowledge of the following ASTM practices and test methods:

    • C617 - Capping Cylindrical Concrete Specimens
    • C1231/C1231M - Unbonded Caps for Concrete Cylinders
    • C39/C39M - Compressive Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Specimens
    • C78 - Flexural Strength of Concrete

    Certification Requirements:

    ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:

    1. A passing grade on the ACI written examination, and
    2. Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.

    ACI Aggregate Level 1 Testing Technician Certification

    This is a two day program that includes a classroom review session on Friday morning and hands-on practice during the afternoon and the written and performance exams on Saturday morning.     An Aggregate Testing Technician - Level 1 is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform, record, and report the results of basic field and laboratory procedures for aggregates.

    Scope and Knowledge

    2. A minimum score of 70% overall.

    The performance examination is closed-book and requires actual demonstration of the required Standards. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform or describe all of the required procedures for each standard.

    Recertification is necessary every five years, and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.

    ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector Certification

    This is a four day program that includes three days of classroom review on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; followed by the written and plan reading exams on Friday. The package price includes the review, the exams, all certification fees and the ACI technical resource materials for this program (CP-21). The CP-21 pack is an extensive collection of ACI, CRSI and ASTM manuals and documents that would cost over $1000 if purchased separately.

    It is important to note that the written exam is "open book" and the CP-21 pack documents are the only materials permitted to be used during this testing session. If you have already purchased these materials prior to registration, you can delete them from the registration fee, but you must bring the CP-21 to the first day of class or you will not be permitted to continue in the session (and will be required to pay a rescheduling fee).     A Concrete Construction Special Inspector is a person qualified to inspect and record the results of concrete construction inspection based on codes and job specifications. The program covers inspection during preplacement, placement, and post-placement operations.

    An Associate Concrete Construction Special Inspector is a person who is knowledgeable about inspection procedures for concrete construction, including preplacement, placement, and post-placement operations; but does not have the experience required to qualify as an ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector.

    Certification Requirements      

    For Concrete Construction Special Inspector:

    ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who:
    1. Hold current certification as an ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I, and
    2. Obtain a passing grade on the written inspection examination, and
    3. Obtain a passing grade on the written plans reading examination, and
    4. Possess at least one of the following qualifications:
      • A B.S. degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering or Construction Engineering Technology from a program accredited by ABET (aka Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), including courses in concrete materials, design or construction), PLUS six months satisfactory work experience, or
      • A B.S. degree in an engineering program PLUS one year of satisfactory work experience, or
      • A Minimum of two years of college or technical school, earning at least 60 credit hours, PLUS two years of satisfactory work experience, or
      • A high school diploma, or equivalent, PLUS a minimum of three years of satisfactory work experience, or
      • Five years of satisfactory work experience.
    The work experience must include:
    • Decision making authority and responsibility
    • Verification of compliance with plans, specifications, and codes
    • Evaluation of concrete construction in the field
    • Documentation and reporting of inspection results
    • Proficiency in appropriate areas of concrete construction inspection
    Verification of the amount and range of work experience by the applicant's employer(s) is required. The three-hour written inspection examination is open-book and consists of approximately 80 multiple choice questions. The one-hour plans reading examination consists of approximately 20 questions and is designed to test the examinee's ability to read and understand engineering drawings. The minimum passing grade for each examination is 70%. Recertification is necessary every five years, and requires successful completion of the written examinations.

    For Associate Concrete Construction Special Inspector:

    ACI will grant certification to those applicants who meet the Field Technician prerequisite and pass both written examinations. Individuals with Associate certification can upgrade to full Inspector status upon submittal and approval of sufficient education/work experience. Recertification is necessary every five years, and requires successful completion of the written examinations.

    The performance examination is also closed-book and requires actual demonstration of the required practices and test methods. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform all of the required steps for each procedure. Recertification is necessary every five years* and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.

    *NOTE: Certifications initiated prior to January 1, 2008, were granted certification for six years. Due to a policy change, however, individuals initiating the certification process January 1, 2008, and later will be certified for five years.

    Certification Requirements:
    ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:

    1. A passing grade on the ACI written examination; AND
    2. Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.

    The one-hour written examination is closed-book and consists of 55 multiple-choice questions. There are between five and ten questions on each of the ASTM test methods and practices. To pass the written examination, BOTH of the following conditions must be met:

    1. At least 60% correct for each of the required test methods and practices; AND
    2. A minimum score of 70% overall.

    The performance examination is also "closed book" and requires actual demonstration of six of the required test methods and practices plus a verbal description of Practice C172/C172M (sampling). The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform (or describe, where allowed) all of the required steps for each procedure.

    Recertification is necessary every five years and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examination.

    The performance examination is also closed-book and requires actual demonstration of the required practices and test methods. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform all of the required steps for each procedure. Recertification is necessary every five years* and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.

    *NOTE: Certifications initiated prior to January 1, 2008, were granted certification for six years. Due to a policy change, however, individuals initiating the certification process January 1, 2008, and later will be certified for five years.

    ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector Certification

    This is a four day program that includes three days of classroom review on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; followed by the written and plan reading exams on Friday. The package price includes the review, the exams, all certification fees and the ACI technical resource materials for this program (CP-21). The CP-21 pack is an extensive collection of ACI, CRSI and ASTM manuals and documents that would cost over $1000 if purchased separately.

    It is important to note that the written exam is "open book" and the CP-21 pack documents are the only materials permitted to be used during this testing session. If you have already purchased these materials prior to registration, you can delete them from the registration fee, but you must bring the CP-21 to the first day of class or you will not be permitted to continue in the session (and will be required to pay a rescheduling fee).     A Concrete Construction Special Inspector is a person qualified to inspect and record the results of concrete construction inspection based on codes and job specifications. The program covers inspection during preplacement, placement, and post-placement operations.

    An Associate Concrete Construction Special Inspector is a person who is knowledgeable about inspection procedures for concrete construction, including preplacement, placement, and post-placement operations; but does not have the experience required to qualify as an ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector.

    Certification Requirements      

    For Concrete Construction Special Inspector:

    ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who:
    1. Hold current certification as an ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I, and
    2. Obtain a passing grade on the written inspection examination, and
    3. Obtain a passing grade on the written plans reading examination, and
    4. Possess at least one of the following qualifications:
      • A B.S. degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering or Construction Engineering Technology from a program accredited by ABET (aka Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), including courses in concrete materials, design or construction), PLUS six months satisfactory work experience, or
      • A B.S. degree in an engineering program PLUS one year of satisfactory work experience, or
      • A Minimum of two years of college or technical school, earning at least 60 credit hours, PLUS two years of satisfactory work experience, or
      • A high school diploma, or equivalent, PLUS a minimum of three years of satisfactory work experience, or
      • Five years of satisfactory work experience.
    The work experience must include:
    • Decision making authority and responsibility
    • Verification of compliance with plans, specifications, and codes
    • Evaluation of concrete construction in the field
    • Documentation and reporting of inspection results
    • Proficiency in appropriate areas of concrete construction inspection
    Verification of the amount and range of work experience by the applicant's employer(s) is required. The three-hour written inspection examination is open-book and consists of approximately 80 multiple choice questions. The one-hour plans reading examination consists of approximately 20 questions and is designed to test the examinee's ability to read and understand engineering drawings. The minimum passing grade for each examination is 70%. Recertification is necessary every five years, and requires successful completion of the written examinations.

    For Associate Concrete Construction Special Inspector:

    ACI will grant certification to those applicants who meet the Field Technician prerequisite and pass both written examinations. Individuals with Associate certification can upgrade to full Inspector status upon submittal and approval of sufficient education/work experience. Recertification is necessary every five years, and requires successful completion of the written examinations.

    A Concrete Field Testing Technician—Grade I is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform and record the results of seven basic field tests on freshly mixed concrete.

    Scope and Knowledge:
    The program requires a working knowledge of the following ASTM test methods and practices:

    • C1064/C1064M—Temperature of Freshly Mixed Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
    • C172/C172M—Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete
    • C143/C143M—Slump of Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
    • C138/C138M—Density (Unit Weight), Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete
    • C231/C231M—Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Pressure Method
    • C173/C173M—Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method
    • C31/C31M—Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field

    Certification Requirements:
    ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:

    1. A passing grade on the ACI written examination; AND
    2. Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.

    The one-hour written examination is closed-book and consists of 55 multiple-choice questions. There are between five and ten questions on each of the ASTM test methods and practices. To pass the written examination, BOTH of the following conditions must be met:

    1. At least 60% correct for each of the required test methods and practices; AND
    2. A minimum score of 70% overall.

    The performance examination is also "closed book" and requires actual demonstration of six of the required test methods and practices plus a verbal description of Practice C172/C172M (sampling). The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform (or describe, where allowed) all of the required steps for each procedure.

    Recertification is necessary every five years and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examination.

    Scope and Knowledge:
    The program requires a working knowledge of the following ASTM practices and test methods:

    • C617/C617M—Capping Cylindrical Concrete Specimens
    • C1231/C1231M—Unbonded Caps for Concrete Cylinders
    • C39/C39M—Compressive Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Specimens
    • C78/C78M—Flexural Strength of Concrete

    Job-task analysis (JTA) for ACI Certification of Concrete Strength Testing Technician


    Certification Requirements:
    ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:

    1. A passing grade on the ACI written examination, and
    2. Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.

    The one-hour written examination is closed-book and consists of approximately 40 multiple-choice questions. There are at least eight questions on each of the practices and test methods. To pass the written examination, both of the following conditions must be met:

    1. At least 60% correct for each of the required practices and test methods, and
    2. A minimum score of 70% overall.

    The performance examination is also closed-book and requires actual demonstration of the required practices and test methods. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform all of the required steps for each procedure. Recertification is necessary every five years* and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.

    *NOTE: Certifications initiated prior to January 1, 2008, were granted certification for six years. Due to a policy change, however, individuals initiating the certification process January 1, 2008, and later will be certified for five years.

    A Masonry Field Testing Technician is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to perform sample preparation and testing of masonry construction-related materials—including materials for brick, structural clay tile, concrete masonry units, prisms, mortars, and grouts—in the field.

    Scope and Knowledge:
    The program requires a working knowledge of field procedures selected from the following ASTM test methods and practices:

    • C67—Sampling and Testing Brick and Structural Clay Tile
    • C140/C140M—Sampling and Testing Concrete Masonry Units and Related Units
    • C780 and C780 Annex—Preconstruction and Construction Evaluation of Mortars for Plain and Reinforced Unit Masonry
    • C1019—Sampling and Testing Grout
    • C1314—Compressive Strength of Masonry Prisms

    This program requires demonstration of the knowledge and hands-on skills covered on the Job Task Analysis (JTA):

    JTA for ACI Masonry Field Testing Technician Certification

    The JTA is a detailed list of specific points of knowledge and skills that may be included in the examinations for this ACI Certification program. ACI urges candidates to use the JTA to prepare for the certification exams.

    Certification Requirements:
    ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:

    1. A passing grade on the ACI written examination; AND
    2. Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.

    The one-hour written examination is closed-book and consists of approximately 60 multiple-choice questions. There are between 8 and 12 questions on each of the ASTM test methods and practices. To pass the written examination, BOTH of the following conditions must be met:

    1. At least 60% correct for each of the required test methods and practices; AND
    2. A minimum score of 70% overall.

    The performance examination is also closed-book and requires actual demonstration of select field procedures described in ASTM test methods C140/C140M, C780, and C1019. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform (or describe, where allowed) required steps for each procedure.

    Recertification is necessary every five years and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.
