A Tall Adventure - The Story Behind the Design & Construction of the Burj Khalifa, the World's Tallest Structure

Presented by: Lawrence C. Novak
                     Director of Structural of Engineering
                     Portland Cement Association (PCA)

The Burj Khalifa tower, formally knows as the Burj Dubai, is the world's tallest man-made structure.  the multi-use skyscraper soars to over a half mile high (828 meters, 2717 feet).  This 3 million square feet reinforced concrete multi-use tower is utilized for retail, a Giorgio Armani hotel, residential and office space.

Designers shaped the structural concrete Tower in a "Y" shape in plan, to reduce the wind forces and to keep the structure simple and foster constructability.  The Architect and Engineering team applied a rigorous geometry to the tower to align all the common central core and column elements.

The presentation will discuss the philosophy behind the structural design, the effort towards sustainability, and the challenges faced during construction of this building.

This meeting is expected to sell out so we encourage you to register early to get a seat!  All registrations are done on-line. You can pay your registration fees on-line with a credit card, or the system will email you an invoice so you can pay by check. We anticipate that this event will sell out, so no-shows will be charged.

All proceeds from this dinner will go to the Student Chapter of ACI at Arizona State University.  You can also sponsor one or more student members for $20 each! This sponsorship will pay for a student to attend this dinner meeting. Any additional proceeds received will go to support future activities of the ASU - ACI Student Chapter.
