The Naval Architecture
of Slabs on Grade
(The REAL Reason They Crack)

Presented by: Allen Face
                    The Allen Face Companies

Allen Face is a graduate naval architect and marine engineer whose family business led him into a 35-year career pursuing the optimization of slab-on-grade design, construction, and quality control. He is the author of the Fmin and FF/FL floor profile numbering systems, and the inventor of the Dipstick, F-Meter and D-Meter floor profilers. A longtime member of Committees 117 (Tolerances), 302 (Slab on Ground Construction), and 360 (Slab on Ground Design), he became an ACI Fellow in 1996 and one of just 150 Honorary Members this past spring at the Minneapolis convention.

From October 2009 to December 2011, Allen authored a monthly "Slab on Grade" column for Concrete Construction magazine. His Rule No. 11a from the October 2010 installment states that:

Slabs on grade are just very shallow blocks of concrete
floating in
pools of very dense liquid.

This floating block analogy is easily accurate enough for everyday work and provides an excellent explanation for why slabs-on-grade crack.

The monthly ACI lunch meetings are very well attended and typically sell out, so please register in advance. These meetings are a great opportunity to network, as well as to brush up on your technical knowledge. Check in begins at 11:30, followed by lunch and the presentation at noon. We work to get you back on the road by 1:00 pm.

All registrations are done on-line. When you complete your on-line registration you will receive an emailed invoice and are then given the option of paying on-line or using the invoice to pay by check.
